Questions

Who is Language-Swap for?

Everyone! If you are learning a new language and would like to try it out it in an informal setting at a time that suits you, Language-Swap is for you. You might not be learning a language, but are interested in finding about the culture of another country, or you might want to share some of your favourite bits of Scotland with someone from overseas.

Language-Swap is particularly useful if you are:

    • A student preparing to go on a semester’s Study Abroad. Language-Swap can help you prepare with language practice, and cultural knowledge and skills. And of course, when you come back you can keep up your language skills with regular practice!
    • An International student looking to improve your English and learn more about Scottish and British culture. Language-Swap can put you in touch with someone who can help you to live like a local!

Language-Swap works on the basis that everyone benefits from sharing their linguistic and cultural expertise. Cultural differences may result in different expectations, but all users are expected to treat each other with respect at all times. See the Terms of Use for full details. Any abuse should be reported using the Contact us function.

What should I include in my profile?

Say a bit about yourself and your interests. Why are you interested in a new language? Are you someone who likes to chat over coffee, or would you like to explore the Stirling area? Are there specific times when you are available? The details that you give will help to set up a successful Language-Swap.

Where should we meet?

Because of Covid-19 you may not want to meet in person. If so, consider arranging an online meeting using Skype, Teams, Zoom or another platform. You can always arrange to meet for a face-to-face chat at a later date.  And if you are happy to meet in person, consider meeting outside or in a well-ventilated indoor venue. For your first meeting, pick a public place that is easy to find but not too noisy. You need to be able to have a conversation! Take sensible precautions, tell a friend where you are going and plan how to get there, and don’t give out personal information unless you are comfortable in doing so.

How often should we meet?

You can meet as often as you choose, depending on your availability. You can also choose to have more than one Language-Swap at the same time.

What if I want to delete my account?

You can delete your account at any time. To do so, visit your profile page, and click on ‘Settings’. This will give you an option to delete your account. Please note that once your account has been deleted there is no way to recover it. If you want to use Language-Swap again, you will need to reregister.
